Canister – Canister vacuums are powerful like uprights, but the cleaning nozzle is placed at the end of a wand, and linked to the vacuum unit through a hose. This unit, or canister, contains the engine, filter, and dust bags. It has wheels so the user can roll it around. Canisters are usually lighter than the average upright vacuum, and are more maneuverable.
Stick – Stick vacuums are a less bulky, slightly less powerful version of an upright. Lightweight and slim, they’re great for small spaces with limited storage (college dorms, apartments, etc.). Best suited to low pile carpeting and bare floors.
Handheld – Because these vacuums are cordless, they’re easy to carry around and clean small areas – stairs, around furniture. They’re usually battery-powered and rechargeable.
