Choose the perfect sweeper
Learn everything there is to know about chosing the right vacuum!
While wall-to-wall carpet has been widely deep cleaned with “traditional” uprights, your cleaning habits and priorities should be paramount in your decision.
Traditional uprights (Fig. 1) are vacuums with no hose on board, but with a large fan and a metal roller with beater bars to “hold” the carpet up into the nozzle to ensure deep cleaning of embedded dirt and grime. Remember, studies have proven that “a 9×12 rug can hold twice its weight in sand and grit, yet still look clean.”
New age uprights have pretty much replaced the traditional upright (the type that served grandmother for twenty years!) in favor of a canister or shopvac-type motor mounted in an upright to provide the convenience of “tools on board.” While having a hose on an upright does provide the convenience, the trade-off is a small opening in the carpet nozzle that fails to provide enought “oomph” for deep cleaning. This is the same small opening that customers must unclog frequently.
But if your carpet/barefloor ratio is 50/50 or you have mostly hard floors, a canister vac with an electric power nozzle and horse hair (no-scratch) bare floor brush works best.
